Vergil
Without strength you can not protect anything. Let alone yourself. Devil May Cry

Vergil is the older half demon son of Sparda, a legendary demon knight who separated the human world and the demon world. As children, Vergil and his twin brother Dante were extremely close to one another. They of course still have sibling rivalry, one always trying to out-do the other at no matter what the cost; several bones were broken in their childhood due to this. Their father, Sparda, left them and their mother when they were just children,to protect them from the demons that were coming after him for being a traitor. Vergil just believed him to be a coward for leaving them defenseless; he and his brother soon began to train themselves on how to fight with the weapons their father had left them. Being that Vergil and Dante's home life isn't well known I tried to make as much sense of this with the history that was given. The known facts of this were that they lived their parents until their father left them, their mother giving them the amulets, and the most important part of their history being that she died and the twins were separated. It is also known that Vergil has more of a 'survival of the fittest' out look on life and has anti-social behavior, so his life after his mother's death must been difficult and traumatic to say the least. After a gun accident, Vergil was left uneasy about using them. He quickly took up his father’s sword Yamato, and it became a favorite of his. Even with the brothers' training, they were still children, and they were no match for the demons that came one night and attacked. The demons didn’t know that Sparda had twin sons; Dante hid while the demons focused their attention on killing their mom and kidnapping Vergil. They pulled him into Hell, wanting to show their catch off to the others, but he escaped their grip and somehow managed to survive the first night alone. Vergil was soon found by an elder devil a few days later, luckily for him, the devil was an old ally of Sparda. It didn’t mean that the devil took care of him. The devil taught him how to fight and how to look out for himself. Once Vergil required the basic skills he was sent away to learn exactly what being a demon is all about. His struggle was what made him begin to fully embrace his demonic bloodline, knowing that was the one way to gain true power. He never relayed on anyone’s help, always fighting for himself and just himself. This time he wouldn’t quit until he knew he was strong enough to protect the things most precious to him. As life in Hell twisted his mind in ways that would scar and mentally break a normal human, Vergil grew stronger while his emotions became withdrawn. He soon escaped hell from one of the Hell gates. Book Canon: The first time he met up with Dante since the incident was when Dante was just starting out in the underground in Jersey, living as a mercenary and hiding under the name of Tony Redgrave. Vergil decided that now was not the time to show himself, so he took the cover of another warrior for hire, the bandaged man known as Gilver. Tony and Gilver became partners, seeing as they were both around the same skill level. Soon, though, their friendship came to an end after Gilver started to open a small portal between the human and demonic world, killing those Tony held closest to him. Even with everyone that ever cared for him gone, Dante still held onto his human name until Vergil beat him to a bloody pulp. With busted knee caps and faced with a painful death, Dante finally took back his name and reclaimed his power, beating Vergil. In his own sick and twisted way, though, Vergil had won. His only goal that night was to make his brother take ahold of their legacy once more and reclaim his true name. At least one year before the events of Devil May Cry 3, Arkham, a human who is very much interested in the occult and everything Sparda, finds Vergil searching for a book in his library. The man begins to tell him about the legend of the Temen-ni-gru, the tunnel that connected the Human and Demon worlds. Vergil endorses Arkham's plan to raise the Temen-ni-gru, beginning the first step of beating the ‘seals’ his father had done. These seals were fallen angels representing the seven deadly sins, and they must be given their names in order for the seals to be undone. This deed is done rather quickly, with Dante hardly interfering thanks to him being busy with mercenary jobs that kept him out of the way. Game Canon: In the event of DMC3, with the seals all undone, the tower is constructed and Vergil is seen on top of it with Arkham at his side. Vergil waits at the top of the tower for Dante, and at one point dispatches Arkham to eliminate Lady, when Dante reaches the peak of the tower. The two banter about family before they begin a ferocious battle. Vergil emerges victorious, taking Dante's Amulet as his prize just before he stabs him through the chest with his own sword, Rebellion. Through this action, Dante’s demonic blood is awakened and he is able to Devil Trigger for the first time. While Vergil prepares to fight him again, Arkham urges him to ignore Dante because they have all they need. The two then jump off the tower to reenter the Forbidden Land. As Vergil and Arkham approach the final door to the Sacrificial Chamber, Vergil calls him out on how he allowed Lady to live, and how he sacrificed his own wife to become a devil himself. Vergil deals him a mortal blow and leaves him for dead as he enters the chamber and commences the ritual on his own. During this ritual, he is momentarily interrupted by a blinded demon known as Beowulf, who has mistaken him for Dante. However, Vergil quickly defeats the devil, and takes his soul as a Devil Arm. Vergil was not able to undo their father’s seal and was later interrupted by Dante. The twins engaged in another fight, which is interrupted by Lady, who was tricked previously by her father's false words that he was under Vergil's mind control, when in truth he was not. Both demonic brothers are equally wounded, and Jester, Arkham's demon self, makes his appearance by announcing that everybody has served their role nicely. Jester later turns back and forth between Arkham and Jester, explaining why Vergil's ritual was incomplete, and why Vergil had failed against Dante and Lady. Arkham completes the ritual, and then fights with the three warriors while waiting for the tower to activate. Once it does, he knocks them off the ascending platform, where Vergil fell into an abyss. Later, after Dante entered the Netherworld, Vergil is seen passing through the Divine Library, with Lady still huddled up, wounded and in grief over her father Arkham, after her battle with Dante. Vergil later interrupts Dante's fight with the ascended Arkham, and the twins finish Arkham off together. However, Vergil has not given up his goal of obtaining the Force Edge, their father's sword, and the twins are again forced to fight. Though Dante is able to defeat Vergil, he cannot convince him to return to the Human World. Vergil lets himself fall even deeper into the Netherworld.
Vergil's personality is almost the complete opposite of his younger twin brother, Dante's, personality. Vergil is calm, cool, and collected. Unlike his brother, who enjoys partying, drinking, and loud music, Vergil would rather spend a quiet night with tea, books and classic music. He hates parties because they are too loud, and he cannot hold alcohol to save his life. He spends most of his free time when he isn’t training in the library reading. With all the books he has read he has learned bits and pieces of other languages. He is quite intelligent for someone his age, he speaks as someone beyond his years, and from what he has seen in his life it’s only natural. When he was a child he was involved in a firearm’s accident, because that accident he prefers swords over guns. He considers guns unworthy of a "true warrior" because they require no real skill. Anyone can stand there and fire off a gun, unlike swords which takes years to master. He is very quiet, only speaking when needed. His quietness is not due to a lack of self confidence however, he never shows fear over anything. Unlike Dante, Vergil is willing to completely embrace his demonic heritage. He seeks to take his father's power and cold persona in exchange of his human emotions. While Dante seeks to protect humanity from the demons, Vergil wants more demonic power, regardless of the consequences to those around him. He is dedicated to his craft and has an intense sense of perfection which can make him distant to those he deems as weak. Even though Vergil is cold and rarely shows his true emotions, he does still feel guilty about not protecting his mother and baby brother. His failure to protect her is what drives him in his obsessive road to more power. His mother’s ultimate death is what caused him to forsake any true hope at retaining a positive human outlook. Despite his normally cold personality, he does cherish some things: the Demon Katana Yamato, a keepsake by his father, and his own half of the Perfect Amulet, a keepsake from his late mother. His need for power has twisted the way he cares for certain things, like his own brother. At first he wanted more power to protect those that he cared for most, but with that power came corruption, and in his mind those that he wanted to protect were no longer worth it. Now he wants his brother to gain his own power, and to be worthy of it. He wants his brother to grow up, think rationally, and start acting like a demon. Even if this means Dante ends up hating him. Like his brother, Vergil does tend to have a one track mind. For Vergil it is all about power, and he has no real focus for anything else. Things like friendships and lovers mean nothing to him. He just has pawns and people he finds less annoying then most. Once someone runs out of usefulness to him, he normal does away with them. Vergil is known to get what he wants, no matter what. He is seen as cruel, calculating and isn't above using dirty tricks to get his way. His sense of honor is rather shallow. He prefers to fight fair in the ring, but outside of battle there are no rules. His most notable acts of cruelty would be burning an old woman's house down, murdering an entire party and using the corpses as weapons, and turning a little girl into a demonic life sucking tree.
Vergil possesses superhuman strength, agility, stamina, regeneration as well as the ability to invoke his Devil Trigger; which is his true demonic form. In this form he gains the powers to fly and his speed and strength is multiplied by ten fold. As he does not consider firearms true weapons, he manifests Summoned Swords, blue energy shaped swords, to use as long-range weapons. He also has a set of boots and gauntlets known as Beowulf, and they up his stats. With the help of his sword, Yamato, he has the power to teleport, but this is only with his blade in hand. With his regeneration he can be shot in the head, stabbed in the chest, or even have his arm cut off and he will still live and recover, but his healing is in a timed state; meaning that as long as his powers can keep up with the wounds he will be fine. Once his wounds are too great for his abilities to handle, he will fall into a coma like state until his wounds finally heal. Like other demons he has the power to collect souls. Once he defects an enemy they release red orbs, which in game is used as currency to unlock power ups. As for melee, Vergil utilizes a real-life sword style with the Yamato known as Iaido, which involves attacks with both the sword and sheath. His skills in swordsman ship have been known to exceed his brother’s. Being that is he a demon he has the ability to possess or at the very least manipulate people into doing what he wishes. He uses this ability to control and summon lesser demons and even in some cases weak minded humans like he did in the novels. In the 3rd game, Lady was also under the assumption that he possessed her father, this however was false.
